1. People can fall asleep for 8-10 seconds and not even know it!

TRUE
Research shows that when you reach a certain level of sleep deprivation, your brain shuts off and you fall asleep. These short microbursts

2. Women wake up much more often during the night than men.

FALSE
Waking up during the night is an equal-opportunity brain activity and both men and women do it far more often than they realize. On average, a person will wake up between 10 and 12 times an hour for two or three seconds at a time, and another four or five times a night for 15 seconds or longer.

3. Exercising right before bedtime is a good way to fall asleep.

FALSE
Exercise can help you fall asleep as long as you don’t do it too close to your bedtime. For best results, exercise at least two to three hours before your bedtime or exercise in the morning.

4. Not getting enough sleep can make you hungry.

TRUE
According to a large recent study of a nationally representative sample of nearly 10,000 adults between the ages of 32 and 49, people who sleep less than seven hours a night are significantly more likely to be obese. While more research needs to be done on this subject, it seems that even mild sleep deprivation can disrupt the hormone levels that regulate appetite.

5. Snoring bothers women more than men.

TRUE
Women are more than four times more likely than men to say that their partner’s snoring bothers them. This may be due to the fact that men tend to snore more often and more loudly than women. Loud or gaspy snoring can be a symptom of sleep apnea where the airway closes for seconds at a time and no air flows.

6. Teenagers and young adults are generally night owls.

TRUE
Teenagers and young adults are biologically programmed to fall asleep later at night and wake up later in the morning. Generally speaking, it’s tough for them to wake up early. Some schools recognize this, and are eliminating early morning classes.

7. You can start to train your child to sleep as early as two years old.

FALSE
You can start to train your baby to sleep more regularly long before his or her second birthday. The process of settling your child to sleep can start as early as three to six months.

8. Women are naturally equipped to sleep better than men.

TRUE
Even though it may not seem like it sometimes, women tend to experience a deeper, more restorative level of sleep than men  and they hold onto it better than men in the aging process. But, unfortunately, a woman’s total sleep time diminishes, and she sleeps less than her male counterpart as she enters her 40s and 50s.

9. When you can’t sleep, it’s usually best to leave your bedroom and do something relaxing.

FALSE
Whenever possible, stay in bed, relax mentally and get comfortable. By staying calm, comfortable and keeping your environment conducive to rest, sleep will usually follow. And if you want to fall back asleep quickly, don’t turn on the TV set or turn on the lights.

10. The best natural sleep of your life will probably happen before you are a teenager.

TRUE
Research shows that, by and large, children experience a deeper, more restorative sleep than adults. Children need more of it too! While a 12-year-old child may need 10-12 hours of sleep a night to be adequately rested, a 35-year-old adult may feel well rested after sleeping eight hours a night.
